You need nails to operate the nailgun(like gas for the chainsaw or auger). BTW, is the name of the tool in your recipe simply called 'nailgun' ? <- Sorry for my lack of knowledge with names, yeah yeah blood editor ). I'm glad to hear that a nail gun exists, having a more advanced repair tool is always welcome.

Of course, loading a tool would have to be done in the crafting window with the same idea of repairing a weapon/tool. For example, if you wanted to repair a concrete block, you would create ammo for it by combining gravel and small stones, then load the tool and then comence repairing. I would have thought a better repair tool would have been one that is more universal with ammo. The idea of not having any ammo bothers me. So, if you've tested the nailgun what are your thoughts? Any issues with glitches, distance, anything? It was hilarious and disgusting that a AAA developer decided that they would cheat and make it look like the character was doing something off camera that would be immediately apparent to anyone beyond that characters perspective.

I was recently playing Dead Rising 3 with a friend and he was crafting a combo weapon and it basically looked like he took a knee to play with himself for 5 seconds. I'm glad they didn't try to add a horrid animation on upgrades/repairs and it really is just in game actions. Fast repairs and upgrades and at a decent cost(nail + material to upgrade).

Other than that and the fact that it uses no ammo, I think they really did a great job. Maybe they need to tweak the model/mesh a bit especially the part where it blocks 30% of the screen. So I'm tooling around with the nailgun and it seems to work well. I dropped this in modding because as of right now you can only use the nailgun with a custom recipe.
